Not necessarily. Most people understand as kids, some make bad choices. The key is, how did you deal with it, and what steps have you made to not do it again.

You have to be open and honest about it when they question you.

In some places today you wouldn't have a criminal charge at all, so probably will not interfere.
I think you would be more aware of the issues and probably able to work with a more broad perspective too.
It could be a backwards sort of advantage that you've experienced that type of consequence in your younger life!
All they can say is "no" so go ahead and try if you really are interested in doing this work.
